Atari Jaguar with CD unit 3/4 view

The Atari Jaguar was released in 1993. It was the first home console that Atari released in almost ten years. The Jaguar was marketed as a 64-bit system. This was somewhat deceptive as its main processors are not 64-bit. However, it had some revolutionary games for its day including Aliens Versus Predator and RayMan.

The Jaguar has five processors:
a programmable 32-bit RISC GPU dubbed TOM
a 64-bit RISC Object PU
a 64-bit RISC Blitting PU
a 32 bit DSP dubbed JERRY
and a Motorolla 16 bit 68000 PPU running at 13.295 MHz.
The system has 2MB of DRAM.

The Jaguar has a 16 million color palette. It can produce CD-quality sound in 16-bit stereo. The system supports a variety of sound synthesis including wavetable, AM, and FM.

The Jaguar has a 32-bit cartidge port, two controller ports, and RF, S-Video, Composite, and RGB outputs. It also has a 9600 baud serial port, and a dsp port for high-speed synchonous serial io.

Atari Jaguar controller
One of the outstanding features of the Jaguar is its controller. It features a 12 button keypad, in addition to a regular joypad, and three buttons. It fits surprisingly well in your hands and looks something like an X-Box controller. A six button controller was also released.
