The Colecovision was released in the Summer of 1982. It was Coleco's second console, the first being the Telstar which was a pong game. Donkey Kong was packaged with the system, making it a surefire success. It went out of production in 1984.
The Colecovision has an 8-bit Zilog Z80A cpu running at 3.58 MHz and a Texas Instruments TMS9928A video display processor. It has 8kb of RAM and 16kb of VRAM. Its palette is only 16 colors. However, it can display 32 sprites, an impressive number for its day. It has a resolution of 256x192. The audio system is powered by a Texas Instruments SN76489AN chip. It has 3 tone channels and 1 noise channel.
Three expansions were released for the Colecovision. The first was an adaptor to play Atari 2600 games. The second was a steering wheel with gas pedal. The third, called the super game, was Coleco's version of the 32X.
