The Sega Dreamcast was released to the Japanese market in 1998. It was released in America the following year. It was Sega's last home system to date. The Dreamcast's cpu is a Hitachi SH-4 running at 200 Mhz. It is a 32-bit RISC chip that can process 360 million instructions per second. The system has 16 megabytes of main RAM, 8 megabytes of video RAM, and 2 megabytes of sound RAM. It has a 3 million polygons/second peak rendering rate. It has a palette of 16.77 million colors. There are many hardware based graphics functions including perspective-correct texture mapping; point, bilinear, trilinear and anisotropic mip-map filtering; Gouraud shading; z-buffer; Colored light sourcing; full scene anti-aliasing; fog; bump mapping; texture compression; and shadow and light volumes. The sound system featured 64 channels with full 3d support. It also has hardware based audio compression. |
