In the mid 00s things were not looking good for Nintendo. It was no longer the dominant console maker it was in the 80s and 90s. The GameCube lagged far behind Sony's PS2 and Microsoft's XBox. It was fortunate enough to have been able to revive the GameBoy and follow it with the very successful GameBoy Advance. However, a new generation of handhelds were on the horizon. Most notable of these was Sony's PSP.

Nintendo made a decision to replace the Gameboy Advance with an affordable and innovative system rather than a state of the art system. At first it seemed like a terrible blunder, as the PSP got off to a great start with its high resolution screen and quality software. However, over time, the DS gained market share. This was in no small part due to its original games that made use of its touch screen. Although the PSP had great games as well, they were not novel, as many seemed like ports of old PS1 games.

Not long after the release of the DS, Nintendo released the DS Lite. It featured a brighter screen and a slightly smaller case.
