Nintendo NES 3/4 view
In the early 80s Nintendo, an established Japanese entertainment company, began to produce video games. Some of its first successes were Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. In 1984 Nintendo released a video game system in Japan called the Famicom. The American version of the system, the NES, was released in 1986. The same year a 3.5" disk drive was released for the Famicom. The NES went out of prduction in the mid 90s.

The NES uses a 6508 Motorola CPU running at 1.79 MHz. It has 2 kilobytes of RAM and 2 kilobytes of VRAM. The screen resolution is 256x240. It has a palatte of 52 colors and can display 16 colors simultaneously. Like the atari 5200 it supports 8x8 and 8x16 sprites. However it can support 64 sprites. It also has hardware support for horizonal and vertical scrolling.

The NES was the first system to use a joypad. It also has a large variety of controllers including the Power Glove, U-Force, R.O.B. the Robot, The Zapper, and a Foot controller. It also has a 4 player adapter.
