Review of The Horde for the 3DO

With the introduction of CD-ROM games, software companies began to experiment with using live action video. As we all know, there is very little live action video in any games these days, and the experiments, such as Night Trap and Supreme Warrior, may be viewed as rather unsuccessful. However, video can add a lot to a game, so long as it does not hamper the game play. One game that made good use of digital video was The Hoard. Its digital video cut scenes were well produced, full of humor, and added much to the rest of game.

The Horde is a sim, strategy, hack and slash game something like Act Raiser for the SNES. Your job is to protect the village from The Horde by digging moats and trenches. If you are feeling lucky, you can guard undefended sections and try to hack the red devils to bits. Although there is an action element to the game, it is rather unimportant, as the real gameplay lies in the strategy.

The graphics are rather unique. They have a 16-bit feel, but have greater detail provided by the 32-bit color palette and higher resolution. Unlike most simulation type games, the controls are simple and intuitive. So if you want to play something different, give The Horde a try. You will be glad that you did.
