I am not a big fan of sports games. If I want to play sports I would rather go out and play the real thing than sit inside and mash buttons. When I do play sports games I prefer fantastic arcade versions like Tournament Cyberball, or 2020 Super Baseball, as I do not find that playing ‘realistic’ versions very much like playing the actual sports anyway. This being said, I had a lot of fun with True Golf Pebble Beach. This is all the more surprising, as it is more of a simulation than an arcade sports game like Mario Golf. With its slow pace, it is the kind of game that anyone can pick up and play. Further, being fairly realistic, it appeals to non-gamers and gamers alike.
Few games integrate digital video as well as True Golf Pebble Beach. Like many games, it makes use of digital video cut scenes, in this case aerial video of the holes. It also manages to seamlessly integrate video of golfers, very much like the digitized fighters of Mortal Kombat. You don’t need a whole lot of footage to make different types of swings and short walks around the green, thus the digital movies work very well. They also blend right into the texture mapped polygon courses. Overall, the graphics have stood the test of time well. However, they do not have the detail that you see in today’s games.
Another strength of the game is that the course is modeled after the legendary course at Pebble Beach. So if you ever wanted to see what it is like to play there, then this will give you an idea.
