The Sega Saturn was released in 1994 and followed right on the heels of the 32X. It was Sega's first stand alone conslole since the Genesis. The Saturn has eight processors. The first is a System Control Unit. It uses two Hitachi SH2 32-bit RISC processors running at 28.6MHz as its main processors. The Saturn has a Hitachi SH1 32-bit RISC co-processor. It has two custom video display processors. VDP 1 has dual 256 kilobyte frame buffers for rotation and scaling effects. It can texture map, and has Goraud shading. It has a 512 kilobyte cache for textures. It can produce 200,000 texture mapped polygons per second. VDP 2 supports 5 simultaneous scrolling backgrounds and 2 rotating playfields. It renders animation at 60 frames per second. It has 24-bit true color graphics. The system has a resolution of 704x480 pixels. |
