Sega CD Archive

In 1992 Sega released a CD expansion for the Megadrive known as the Mega-CD. The following year it was released in America as the Sega-CD. The system is roughly the same size as the Genesis. The Genesis piggybacks on top of the drive. It features a tray loading single speed CD drive. A second version of the Sega-CD was released for the Genesis II. It mounts on the side of the Genesis and features a clam shell CD player.

The heart of the Sega-CD is a Motorola 68000 running at 12.5MHz. It has 6 megabits of RAM, 512 kilobits of audio memory, and a 128 kilobit cache for the CD-ROM. In addition the unit has 64 kilobits of RAM for saved game data. The system features 8 channel stereo sound. It has PCM and CD sound mixing. It has an 8x oversampling digital filter and a 16-bit Digital to Analog convertor.
