Nintendo released the Superfamicom to the Japanese market in 1990. The Super Nintento was released in the US in September 1991 with a pricetag of $199.99. The SNES was a late entry into the 16-bit revolution, but eventually came out on top.

The SNES uses a 65816 16-bit cpu running at 3.58 MHz. It has a pallete of 32,768 colors and could display 256 colors simultaneously. It can display 128 sprites and can handle large sprites of upto 64x64 pixels. The system also featured Mode 7 graphics. The system has a resolution of 512 x 448 pixels. It was one of the first systems to have S-Video output. An 8-bit Sony SPC700 sound chip is the core of the audio system. It features 8 channels. The SNES has 128 kilobytes of RAM, and 64 kilobytes of VRAM. Like most systems it has two controller ports. It also has an expansion port on the bottom of the unit.

One of the unusual features of the SNES is that it has the ability for the game cartridges to contain processing units. For example Mario Kart has a DSP chip, and Star Fox has an FX chip for graphics processing.

Various accessories were produced. These include the Super Scope light rifle, mouse, and satellite adapter.
